Understanding Complex Trauma in Children

Complex trauma refers to the psychological, physiological and neurological impacts of being exposed to multiple distressing and invasive events, that happen repetitively over a sustained period, including physical and mental abuse, neglect, violence, significant loss and other life threatening and dangerous events.
Research over the past few decades has resulted in a neuroscientific knowledge base which, when integrated into a relational approach, has become the most prominent framework for understanding and responding to the needs of children affected by trauma and adversity.
This workshop explores the latest research, and draws heavily on Tracey's own experiences of working positively with children impacted by trauma. Participants will:

- Increase their knowledge of the way that trauma, adversity and toxic stress impacts on functioning and development of children
- Identify and utilise the key elements that can support young children affected by trauma
- Develop practical skills to work with children, with an emphasis on increased skill in supporting children through relationship building and attending to the child's needs and behaviour through a trauma lens
- Understand the need for advocating for change to the way in which our systems currently address complex trauma
